New York State Constitutional Convention Defeated
By 83% of the vote, a proposal to hold a New York State Constitutional Convention was defeated. The proposal was opposed by most labor organizations in the state as a danger to current constitutional protections. In addition, the convention was cited as a colossal waste of taxpayer money with an estimated cost of at least $100 million dollars and some estimates as high as $350 million. The last convention, held in 1967, proposed some substantial changes that were ultimately defeated by the voters. The organzations opposed to the convention pointed out that there is a simpler alternative procedure for amending the constitution, several examples of which appeared on the same ballot.
