Day of Action - February 26th

Last Updated : Sat 10th February 2018 04:01pm

Fifty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., joined striking sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee. They stood together to fight for the freedom to join in a strong union, and to be treated with dignity and respect at work. They carried signs that boldly proclaimed: “I AM A MAN.”

Fifty years later, a handful of corporate elites, divisive extremists, and corrupt politicians continue to rig the system and our economy against us. But working people and allies nationwide are rising up. On the Working People’s Day of Action, we will stand up for our freedom to come together and negotiate collectively, and to fight for equitable pay, affordable health care, quality schools, vibrant communities, and secure futures for all of us. The action day is Saturday, February 24. Please find an event near you here and spread the word.

The AAUP is also participating in a national day of action on February 26, the day of oral arguments for the Janus v AFSCME case in the Supreme Court. The Janus case is just part of an all-out attack on our freedom to join together in unions so that we can set standards and create fair rules for working families. It comes at a time when higher education faces unprecedented corporatization and when educators and our colleges and universities are under siege for the role they play in our society. If there's no event on your campus on the 26th, we encourage you to convene a meeting to go through ourcampus conversation guide, even if it's just with chapter leaders and activists.

If you want stickers or buttons for upcoming days of action February 24 and  26, please make your request to wdavidson@aaup.org before February 14. Please contact aaup-news@aaup.org to share details of your events and participation!
